Emergency Ultrasound

The use of point-of-care ultrasound, performed at a patient's bedside by emergency physicians, has become much more widespread in the last 10 years. The ability to diagnose aortic aneurysms, internal bleeding, pericardial fluid collections, and retinal detachments—just to name a few conditions—in addition to guiding the placement of needles for a wide variety of procedures, has revolutionized the practice of emergency medicine. The Section of Emergency Ultrasound teaches focused clinical ultrasound to students, residents, and fellows at GW, and performs research to discover new ways to improve patient care using clinician-performed ultrasound.
